Hello my name is
Earl M. Walker, Jr. I was raised in Atlanta, GA, and I now live in
Leadville, CO. I never planned to be a woodworker. It just
happened. When I was a kid I used to make a lot of things. I was
given a wood burning kit at the of age 6. I would spend hours
drawing pictures on boards in my grandfather's shop and then tracing
the lines with my wood burner. That experience became the basis for
all my science projects through grade school. I loved working with
wood and built bird houses, boxes, picture frames, etc.

In high school my
best friend and I bought a 23 foot Century mahogany boat with a hole
in it. That was a real learning experience. Boats have a lot of
screws. In college, if I needed a table I built one, and anything
else I needed. It seemed to be the easiest way to have what I
wanted at an affordable price. Well that turned into building stuff
for friends. It was just for fun.
At the end of
college I took up mountain bike racing and it became my career for
the next 10 yrs. I assumed when I retired from racing I would work
in some aspect of the bicycle industry. That's why I moved to
Colorado. I had the most contacts and friends here. My friends had
seen pictures of things I'd made over the years and many asked me to
help make them unique pieces of furniture they couldn't find
anywhere else. Furniture became a part time job that took all my
free time. Everyone said "you should do this for a living."
After a year of not listening to everyone, I decided to hear what
they were saying and give it a try.
In June of
1998, Walker WoodWorks was officially formed in a 200 sq ft garage.
The first year was tough, and the second started the same. Things
then began to pick up. I got into the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in
2000. I sold everything I brought in three hours. I had never
talked to that many people in one weekend. In May of 2001 my wife
and I moved to Leadville and put Walker WoodWorks into the John King
mercantile building that's about 120 years old. The business has
expanded from furniture to include cabinets and custom wood
fabrication. If you can think it up, I can build it. From design
to delivery I perform all the tasks necessary to complete your
custom furniture piece. I use only tried and true techniques like
dovetail, and mortise and tenon joinery. I create furniture that
endears itself to it's owners and helps them establish their legacy.
